How We Test

Every product on phatstuff.net goes through the same process before it is allowed on the site. Here is what that looks like.

1. We buy a sample

Before a product is listed, we order a real sample of it, the same way a customer would. We do not list anything sight-unseen from a catalog photo.

2. We measure it

We check the actual dimensions, weight, and material against what the supplier claims. If a cable tie is rated for a certain bundle diameter, we check it. If a case claims a certain internal size, we measure the internal size. Where the numbers do not match the claim, we either use our own measured numbers or drop the product.

3. We photograph it ourselves

Product photos on this site are our own, taken of the actual sample we tested, not a stock image pulled from a supplier catalog. What you see is what ships.

4. We use it for two weeks

Before anything goes live, it spends two weeks in real use: packed in a gig bag, cinched around real cables, set up and torn down repeatedly, the way it would be used on an actual job. We are checking for the things a five-minute unboxing cannot show: does a strap loosen over time, does a zipper start to catch, does a tray hold its shape under real weight.

5. We publish the numbers, not just a rating

Every product page shows the specific numbers from testing, measured dimensions, weight, load or capacity rating where relevant, rather than a vague star rating. If we could not verify a claim, we say so instead of repeating the supplier’s marketing copy.

6. We drop what fails

If a product does not hold up during the two-week test, it does not get listed. If a product already on the site starts generating returns or complaints that point to a real quality issue, we pull it and look for a better alternative.

This process takes longer than just importing a supplier feed. That is on purpose. The gear on this site is meant to disappear into your setup and just work, not become one more thing you have to think about mid-gig.
